FAQ

Power Issues & When to Be Concerned
1. When should I be concerned and call?
-If you're experiencing intermittent power, dimming or browning, or a full power outage in part or all of your home, it's time to investigate further.

2. Lost power in just your kitchen or bathroom?
-Check your GFCI receptacle. Press the reset button (not the test). If it doesn’t click, it may have failed — this is a common issue and often requires replacement.
Who to Call & Utility vs. Electrician
1. Who should I call — the utility company or an electrician?
-If you’ve lost power to your entire house or business, call your utility company first to check for outages. If the issue is isolated to part of your property, contact us!

2. What’s the difference between a blackout and a brownout?
-A blackout is a complete loss of power, while a brownout is a drop in voltage that causes lights to dim and devices to malfunction.
Breakers & Circuit Safety
1. How does my breaker trip?
-Breakers are designed to trip when they reach a certain temperature. When they do, they typically move to the middle position.

2. What is the correct breaker for my circuit?
-Breaker size must match the wire size — using the correct pairing is essential for safety and performance.
Electrical Systems & Installations
1. Pros & cons of underground vs. overhead service?
-Underground: More reliable and weather-resistant, but costlier.
-Overhead: More affordable, but vulnerable to weather-related damage.

2. Should I use conduit for underground installation?
-Yes, conduit is always recommended. Schedule 40 PVC is commonly used, though some wire types may not require it.
Advanced Electrical Concepts
What is phase rotation and why does it matter?
-Phase rotation determines the direction a motor spins. Incorrect rotation can cause motors to run backward, reducing lifespan and efficiency.

Why do certain circuits in my receptacles show 208/240 volts?
-This could be due to:
--An open neutral, causing unpredictable voltage readings.
--A high leg from an open delta transformer setup, which must be correctly placed in your panel to avoid damaging electronics.
